In Chapter Seventeen, Mr. Bumble is traveling to London. While on a train, he reads an entry about Oliver. It turns out that, Mr. Brownlow published an advertisement offering a reward of five guineas for information on Oliver & his past. Since Mr. Bumble is a greedy man, he rushes to Mr. Brownlow's home and explained to him that Oliver displayed treachery and malice. Mr. Bumble also said that Oliver attacked Noah. So, that led Mr. Brownlow to believe that Oliver was a phony and was a liar. This is what happens in chapter seventeen.
I was wondering if five guineas were the same as five pounds. Do people still refer to guineas to this day?

Cynthia :)

To Cynthia , guinea was a gold coin and part of the British currency back in the 18th century,
(1663 to 1813). The amount it is worth changes throughout history. Guineas were replaced to pounds after the 18th century. However, people still refer products to guinea. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Guinea_(British_coin)#Nineteenth_century

Back to the book: I think Chapter 19 is critical to Oliver when Fagin wants to give Oliver to Sikes. Oliver would probably have a harder time working for Sikes than Fagin who treats him more kindly.

Is it just me or do these people talk REALLY REALLY WEIRD?

Anyway in chapter 16 when Nacy has her violent outburst,it shows that she is not a hardened criminal like Fagin and the others. Although she is eventually quieted the fact that she spoke up in the first place shows that she is not completely loyal to the group.
Aslo I think that this scence is used to foreshadow another scence in the novel in which Nancy will help Oliver against the wishes of Fagin and Sikes.

I agree with both Timothy & Chukwunonso. In chapter nineteen, Oliver is better off with Fagin than Mr. Sikes. Just the thought of Mr. Sikes creeps me out. He threatens Oliver with his vicious abused dog, "Bulls-Eye". He's a heartless criminal! He also warned/threaten Oliver that he'll kill Oliver if he showed any signs of hesitation during the robbery.
When I read chapter sixteen, I have to say that I was shocked and surprised. I never thought Nancy had the courage to stand up for Oliver. It's not even likely that she'll stand up for herself. Especially due to the fact that she has a crush on Mr. Sikes. If they ever get married in the book, he would definitely abuse her like he did to "Bulls-Eye". Anyway, when Nancy stood up and supported Oliver, that showed us that Nancy might help Oliver escape from Fagin & Sikes. Since she became a criminal at a young age, she might know how Oliver feels and she might not want him to suffer the way she did.

Cynthia :)

In chapter 18, Fagin leaves Oliver locked up in the house for days. During the daytime, Oliver has no company. Dodger and Charley ask Oliver why he does not just give himself to Fagin since the money comes easy in their life. Fagin eventually allows Oliver to spend more time with the other boys. Fagin's plan was to isolate Oliver until he becomes thankful for any human contact that he will do whatever Fagin asks. I feel this is a horrible way for Fagin to get Oliver to do whatever he wants. Maybe, if Fagin was nicer to Oliver instead of locking him up, Oliver would be kind to Fagin and do whatever he wants anyway. ---- Teresa

I found it suspicious as to how nobody helped or even looked when oliver was being kidnapped. How could that have happened? Were things back then more country side?

In chapter 19,
Mr.sikes, wanted to plan a robbery, and he needa a small boy to do the job, so Fagin told Oliver to do it. Mr.Sikes said that If oliver shows any signs of hesitation he might kill him & Nancy is the one who delivers Oliver to the scene.

I think Nancy thinks of Oliver as her little brother, because she defended him. Also, she knows how cruel Fagin is, and she doesn't want him to live in that enviornment much longer.

This book is difficult to read but it's coming along :) i love how Nancy stood up for Oliver like a big sis. i hate selfish people like mr. bumble, who lie and cheat for money. i hope Oliver doesn't fall into his hands !

I think that Nancy is relizing that maybe being a criminal isnt the best life and by standing up for oliver it shows that she has a soft side and she doesnt want to be completly controlled. shes a woman in victorian ages, which means that men usually dont care or listen to womens ideas, and they dont usually ever speak out against men.

I felt really bad 4 Oliver when his clothes were being taken away and I think that it would be way worse if Oliver ended up with Mr. Sikes than with Fagin because he would have been treated harsher judging by the way Mr. Sikes threatened Oliver that he is going to release his dog and it is going to attack Oliver this also show that Mr. Sikes is more cruel than Fagin.

* I just realized my original post was on period 11, so here is my answer *

-I thought a lot was revealed of Mrs.Bedwin's character and how she believed in Oliver. Mr.Bumble said that Oliver was a very malicious boy since birth. Mr.Brownlow just gave up on him (O.T), but Mrs.Bedwin did not belive Mr.Bubmle showing us that she has faith in Oliver.

The most interesting part in the story to me was the part when Bumble finds the advertisement about Oliver. I also felt bad for Oliver since Bumble told Mr.Brownlow all the bad things about Oliver when he wasnt that bad at all. It would be interesting to see in the end of the book if Oliver goes to Mr.Brownlow to clear his name.--Kiran

i think its wasn't right for Nancy to take oliver because , he was sent on an errand and they made a bet that oliver wouldnt come back, and Mr. brownlow believed he would so they were both put in a situation as if Grimwig was correct and it turned out to be an accident for oliver not returning.

In chapter 16 I was shock at how Nancy stood up for Oliver not caring of what her consequences would be. Since Nancy grew up as a orphanage and has been with working with Fagin just like is Oliver. I believe she understand what Oliver suffering from. When she was protecting Oliver she was kind of standing up for herself as well in Oliver eyes.

In chapter 22 Sikes lead Oliver to the robbery with Toby Crackit and Barney Sikes's partner in crime. Oliver is trying to beg not to be put in this conflict. He wanted to warn the residents but he was too scary. The resident of the house wakes up and shoots Oliver and he is now bleeding. I believe this book is getting easier because as each chapter proceeds something happens leaving the reader to continue to read to see what will happen next.

Ada- there were many challenging vocabulary but i kinda like the book!(:

i have nothing much too say about the book. The part where Bumble fell in love with the matron, Ms.Corney was kinda funny.

The vocabulary gets annoying when the book gets to an interesting part but is drowned in its challenging words.

I know this is late but..
Now that I look back at it, this book was very intresting to read. My favorite part was the whole scene with Nancy and Sikes, and the murder of Nancy that absolutely changed the book.
