Have fun commenting on and discussing O.T. this weekend. LOL! -- Mr. V
i was surprised that oliver was a resemlence to the portrait in mr. brownslow home ---- Jonathan Yuen
Nancy has been in the group ever since she was little . She shows a great disapproval in what Fagin and Sike does. She is also kind of intelligent because she can think fast. If Nancy decides to get away or run away from the group can she survive by herself ?

i enjoy this book but some parts are a little confusing-- David
I am really surprised that Nancy stood up for Oliver and that she has been in the group since she was little and understands what Oliver is feeling. -Valerie N.
I thought a lot was revelaed of Mrs.Bedwin's character and how she believed in Oliver. Mr.Bumble says that Oliver was a very malicious boy since birth. Mr.Brownlow just gave up on him (O.T), but Mrs.Bedwin did not belive Mr.Bubmle showing us that she has faith in Oliver.

I was surprised when Fagin was gonna use Oliver for the job. The job was that Oliver was gonna break in a house and then open the door so the rest of thieves could get in.
During the reading of Oliver Twist, I think that during the Victorian Era, boys who are poor, and is accused of being a thief have absolutely no power in society. For example, When Nancy have caught Oliver and blame him of being a thief and when Oliver denied being a thief nobody believed him. Instead, the group of bystanders believed a girl who was dressed nicely and seemed to have a stand in society. This tells me that people in those time or even now people may trust a neat looking person rather than a poor little boy.

Mr. Brownlow shows that he is really worried about Oliver when he doesn't return. I don't think he thought Oliver stole his books. Mr. Brownlow put up a reward sign for Oliver's whereabouts. Mr. Bumble tells Mr. Brownlow about OLiver and how bad he is, however Mrs. Bedwin does not believe and I don't think Mr. Brownlow believes it either. Why is it that Mr. Brownlow is worried about Oliver and not mad that he stole his books?

It was nice to see that there are actually kind people who are nice to Oliver such as Mr. Brownlow, who trusts him and cares a lot about him. - Catherine
i think its wasn't right for Nancy to take oliver because , he was sent on an errand and they made a bet that oliver wouldnt come back, and Mr. brownlow believed he would so they were both put in a situation as if Grimwig was correct and it turned out to be an accident for oliver not returning.
Mr. Bumble should have kept his mouth shut about Oliver. In depth, Mr. Bumble knows nothing about him. All he thinks knows is that Oliver is a treacherous, ungrateful and malicious child. But his so-called knowledge of Oliver comes from a manufactured, bias opinion from people who never liked Oliver to begin with, including Mr. Bumble. He never should have told Mr. Brownlow and Mr. Grimwig what he knew. Mr. Bumble told the duo what his perception of Oliver was, not what Oliver truly is.

I think it was nice of nancy to stand up for oliver and for mr.brownlow to believe in Oliver.-Rabia .M
It was quite sad when they were taking Oliver's clothing and Mr. Sikes was threatening to release his dog. I was happy to see that Mr. Brunlow put up an advertisement to know about Oliver. It shows that he knew something bad had occurred and Oliver was not the type of person to run off with the money

i feel like in a way Fagins kinda like the good guy because he even though he trains boys to steal and all that, it wasn't like he had a choice. He's just trying to survive. -Shuyi
I was surprised when Nancy stood up for Oliver when Fagin was yelling/hitting him.

I think this book is very nice. I like how Oliver isn't sure the portrait in the Brownslow home isn't his mother, but still suspects it a little bit.

Why is it that Mr.Brownlow believed what Mr.Bumble had to say about Oliver even though he claimed to have trusted him.---Azza
Nancy often oppses Sikes even though she likes him. Walter
I was surprised about nancy trying to prevent oliver from getting into a life of crime, it shows she has a "heart" and does care about certain things- Matt C.
During the time period of this novel people seem to judge others based on their appearances and the clothes they wear. A man dressed in silk is instantly more well respected than a man in rags. Even if the the man wearing silk was deceitful and cruel and the man in simple clothes was kind and helpful one man would be labeled a gentleman and the other a commoner. At the very beginning of the novel, Oliver was born at the parish. Oliver Twist could have been the child of a beggar or of a noble king, but no one would have known until he was put into worn-out clothing and therefore being labeled as a parish child.
It was only when Mr. Brownlow dressed Oliver in fancy clothes that would have given Oliver a chance at a new life. However, when Nancy kidnaps Oliver and takes him back to Fagin, Oliver is stripped of the fancy clothes and then dressed in simple clothes, that represent the new life he must live, as a theif. -Robyn
I was really surprised when Nancy stood up for Oliver when he was being yelled and hit by Mr.Fagin. Yet, she was the one that helped Fagin get Oliver back.
-Fiona-
i was amaze that Nancy stood up for Oilver, Nancy was in the group since she was little.
i also think that clothing had a identity. When people wear fancy clothing means that they are middle class or high class. when people wear dirty clothes it would mean that they are the lowest class.
-Connie T.
When I read the part where Mr. Bumble read Mr. Brownlow's advertisement I sensed that something was going to go wrong. I wasshocked when Mr. Brownlow gave up on Oliver, but at least Mrs. Bedwin still believed in Oliver.
I also thought that Nancy and Oliver were going to do something to run away, but shockingly they didn't.
I think Nancy is kind of a hypocrite because she was the one taking Oliver back to Fagin, but was the one protecting Oliver from Fagin's plan to make him go be a thief.
-Jenny W.
I was stupified at the fact that Nancy had been with the thief clan for so long, as well to see her stick up for Oliver's well being.
Another part was to see the Beadle give Oliver such a terrible title. After seeing the advertisement he quickly saw it as a chance to once again terrorise poor little Oliver. He is a very evil and cruel man...and he is the one that should be mistreated instead of Oliver.
--Kemba H. pd11
I have a feeling that Oliver's old unfair caretaker Mrs. Mann will be brought to justice in the future of the book. Also I think that Mr. Brownlow still trusts and worries for Oliver a little bit. -Jeffrey
I cannot believe that Mr. Brownlow doesn't have enough faith in Oliver to be able to believe what Mr.Bumble accused Oliver of. I thought that he would have little more faith in Oliver. I was happy to find that Mrs.Bedwin had enough faith in Oliver to not believe what Mr.Bumble accused Oliver of. You can see that Mrs.Bedwin's actions symbolizes her being a motherly figure to Oliver, as Roseleen and August were in the book, " The Secret Life of Bees." From the beginning of the book, you can sense that, from how she treated Oliver and how she had enough faith in Oliver to not believe a total strangers words.
-Tasnin
I think it was brave/kind of Nancy to stand up for Oliver.
-- Erica
in answer to Renee's question, I do belive that nancy cansurvive in the world on her own. Fagin and Bill Sikes, have taught her to be independent, and she can pick pockest her way through life. Even though that is not a good thing.
After reading until the end of Chapter 19, I was very surprised at certain things. I was not expecting Nancy to have stood up for Oliver at all, because she didn't show this kind of sweetness in the previous chapters. Although Fagin and Bill Sikes are planning on making Oliver commit this robbery, I predict that Nancy will somewhat stop it. Not only will she stop Oliver from committing this robbery, but she will also try to runaway with him to someplace. She is old enough to know what to do to and, where to go, and how to take care of herself, if she decides on running away. - Dina Elfaham
When oliver was at the owrkhouse, no one bothered to learn who he was inside, they didnt even care. his situation tells us how the poor were treated and how they werent even recognzed as an individual but as someone inignificant.
- Tasmina
during our reading we often see how unfair Oliver is treated along with no mercy. It was refreshing to finally have seen Oliver being treated with some compassion not only by Mr. Brownlow but surprisngly by Nancy as well. We learn Nancy has worked for for Fagin since she was a little girl and of course commited crimes. She finally stands up for Oliver which is much needed since he is often being abused by other, when Sikes was just about to hit poor Oliver Nancy defends him, she also states how she does not want a life full of crime for Oliver. It was refreshing to see some concern and compassion expressed towards Oliver. He finally had someone to express concern for his well being and we also get to see a caring kind side of Nancy during this reading.
I think Nancy is started to show her side that we dont really see. She seems very caring of Oliver and she stands up for him lately in the book. I think this is significant in the book because it shows us maybe Nancy is more than what she seems (a thief or possibly prostitute). Sharon
the book isn't (in my opinion) the best book and the use of english in Oliver Twist is a bit hard at first but overall its quite good... it would be better if i can understand it better though ~___~
- Jonathan Lee
I disagree with TinyJennyx because Nancy isn't a hypocrite at all. The only reason she kidnapped Oliver is because if she didn't she would probably be killed and she protected Oliver because he is what she used to be before she meet Sikes and Fagin.
-Kimberly, pd.6
wow i still cant believe oliver was shot ; i can only imagine the pain -.- =( -----Dami
i cant belive Sikes killed Nancy. that was a horrible scnece, and how Dickins explained everything in detail put me in tears. It was terrifying and in a way digusting. I had to quickly skim through that scence because the details were very deep and it was way to much for me LOL. I was so happy when Sikes basically killed himself, i was laughing because now he knows how it feels and got to feel Nancy's pain :)
